Phonics


This past year, our district purchased Phonics First. It is a multisensory, systematic, structured, sequential, phonics-based approach to teaching phonics. It is rooted in the Orton-Gillingham principles of instruction. /div>





Developmental Stage Features

Emergent Spellers: (Ages: 1-7; pre-K to mid-1)

Letter Name Spellers: (Ages: 4-9; K to early 3rd)
                Initial and final consonants
                Initial consonant blends (bl and st) and digraphs (ch and sh)
                Short vowels (pet)
                Affricates j, ch, dr, tr (jron = drum, chrap = trap)
                 Final consonant blends and diagraphs (dish, land)


          Word  within Word Spellers: (Ages: 6-12; 1 to mid-4)
·                     Vowel-consonante-e (bake)
                   R-controlled vower patterns (ar, ur)
                     Common long vowels (vowel teams)
                     Complex consonant patterns (scr, thr, tch, ck, kn, dge, qu) 
                    Abstract vowels (ow, ou, ew, oi, oy, oo, au, aw)

           Syllable juncture Spellers: (Ages: 8-18; 3rd to 8th)
            Doubling and e-drop with ed and ing endings (bake=baking)
            Other doubling at the syllable juncture (matter, not mater and cabbage, not cabage) 
            Long-vowel patterns in the stressed syllable (complaint, not complante)
            R-controlled vowels in the stressed syllable (disterb= disturb)
            Common prefixes and suffixes

           Derivational Relations Spellers: (Ages: 10+; 5-12)
             Silent and sounded consonants (hasten and haste)
            Consonant changes (or alternations) involve a predictable change in a consonant’s sound                          or its sound and spelling. (confess-confession and presume-presumption)
            Vowel changes (or alternations) most often involve a change in the vowel’s sound.                                    (compose-composition, democracy-democratic)
             Latin-derived suffixes often have sound-alike counterparts. (invisible, conference)
                     Assimilated prefixes are characterized by double consonants. (suppress, immerse)

Word Sort Activities
for 3rd and 4th Grade 
  1. Word Sorts- You can do word sorts in several ways. You can do word sorts in whole group, with a partner, or individual. There are different type of sorts: open sort (find ways to group the words according to vowel patterns, meanings, parts of speech), closed sort (sort words with given categories or guided words provided by the teacher), blind sort (spell or write words in the correct category as a partner calls each word aloud without showing it), writing sort (write their words under the correct categories), word hunt sort (hunt through their own reading and writing for words that are additional examples of the sound, pattern or meaning) and speed sort (sort words quickly under the correct categories).
  2. Roll That Dice Game - Follow directions on page 163 of Words Their Way (2008).
  3. Spelling City - www.Spellingcity.com 
  4. Cursive Spelling - Write words in cursive.
  5. Rainbow Words - Write high frequency words with a different color crayon. 
  6. Tic-Tac-Toe Spelling - Play tic-tac-toe with your spelling words. 
  7. Write and Draw - You will choose some of you words to use in a sentence and draw pictures of words you do not use in a sentence. 
  8. SAW - Sort, Alphabetize and Write - Sort your words and then write them in alphabetical order on the sort. 
  9. Word Triangles - Begin with one letter at the top of the triangle. Add letters to the words you make to see how many extensions you can make with your spelling words.                                                 Ex.   10.
